The past few days have been the most tiring and yet most rewarding of my life so far. Working for Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust has given me the oppurtunity to shoot at both Haighfest & the two Haigh Live concerts this year.
Anyone who live in or around Wigan knows about Haighfest: it's a huge one day festival where a bundle of the best unsigned bands in the area get the chance to play on a professional stage in front of thousands of people (there were over 7000 people at one point this year). I was given an official photoagraphers pass and granted full shooting privalidges
i was even allowed backstage, however no photography allowed back there after an incident (more about that later..).
Before Haighfest was Haigh Live, two huge concerts put on by Cuff & Taylor event management. On the Thrusday was The Coral & The Courteeners (plus some last minute band whos name i've forgotten). I was allowed to shoot this concert (not from the press pit unfortunately). It was still a fantastic night with 10,000 strong audience. I'm actually kind fo glad i wasn't in the press pit that night though...10,000 people + lots of beer = alot of urination, and nowhere near enough toilets (but i mean how can you provide that many toilets...it was bound to happen). People started resorting to pissing in bottles, which is fine, to be honest it's better than just pissing in the field...but then some jackasses started hurling them towards the stage and the crowd..the press pit took most of the arsenal...yeah...
The Next night was the last one and had more bands, first was some new singer from st. annes who won a contest to sing there, a guy called starman from pineapple dance studios (he was quite interesting to shoot haha lively bugger with great facial poses), a four piece group who were on x factor/britains got talent...i forget which one, they had tattoos and sung pop songs in a four piece harmony...then jedward (i cannot stand those pineapple headed knobs but damn they made for good shots), and of course the headliner: Mr Peter Andre.
I shot this nice lineup from the press pit, my first proper shooting experience, and it was epic. At first i was shadowing a freelance photographer that one of my colleagues put me in touch with but then i just made it my own. I will never forget that night; i will forever remember it as the night that one of the jedward twins almost knocked me over after they both decided to run through the press pit and try throw themselves at the audience. Mr Andre was very particular about the photographers, so the lot of us in the pit got a talking to by one of his brothers (the tall one with muscles..don't know his name lol) about how we get a short time to take our shots and leave. He was friendly enough about it and even shook our hands but why he fealt the need to relay the information we already knew i don't know. There had been an incident before with some hairdressers taking his shots instead of working and a photographer sneaking backstage and tryign to shoot jedward on the toilet...always has to be some to spioil it =/
I'm tired, i'm sore & i'm extremely sunburnt...but i loved every minute of it. I don't know if i quite have what it takes to become a gig photographer (or if i'd ever want to be one) but i'm grateful for the experience all the same. The shots i took were for Linc Online (as i wasn't allowed to shoot for my own personal protfolio...) so i'm not sure if i'll ever be able to upload any on here. However when the gallery goes up i will provide a link because i'm actually quite proud of a couple fo the shots XD
If anyone was at these shows please feelf ree to leave a comment baout your experiences
